Honoring Our Past History Club Participates in Village Dedication Ceremony

Clinton Middle School's History Club recently took part in a historic dedication ceremony at the Old Burying Ground in the Village of Clinton, honoring the village's founders along with Native Americans and African Americans laid to rest there.

As part of the ceremony, Mayor Tantillo proclaimed Nov. 8 as the day to dedicate new stone markers for 14 Revolutionary War veterans who had been buried in unmarked graves for more than 200 years. The event also recognized the contributions of Indigenous people and African Americans in the community's history.

The CMS History Club played a meaningful role in the day’s events, delivering the dedication speech for the new African American Memorial, which features two handcrafted benches. One bench displays a poem written by Spencer Scoones, a 2031 alumnus, who designed the memorial concept last year. His design was later brought to life by Mr. O'Rourke's high school construction class, connecting student creativity and community collaboration across generations.

This partnership between students, educators and the Clinton Historical Society stands as a powerful example of how history can inspire civic pride and lasting connections within the community.
