Freedom Writers Founder Delivers Powerful Message to Clinton Students
On May 28, Clinton students had the opportunity to hear from Dr. Erin Gruwell, a nationally renowned educator, author and founder of the Freedom Writers Foundation. Best known for her work with the original Freedom Writers and the powerful message behind the book and film “Freedom Writers,” Dr. Gruwell challenged students to think about the impact they have on those around them and the role each person plays in creating a positive school community.
During the assembly, Dr. Gruwell and Toney, one of the original Freedom Writers students, shared stories from their time together in the classroom and reflected on the profound impact that a caring teacher can have on a young person's life. Toney spoke candidly about growing up in poverty, experiencing violence, the absence of his parents, and the challenges he faced as a child. He emphasized the importance of self-advocacy and how the support, encouragement and belief of his teacher helped him overcome obstacles and find a path forward. Together, their stories highlighted the power of relationships, resilience and the lasting difference educators can make in the lives of students.
Following the assembly, 18 eighth grade students were selected to participate in an afternoon workshop led by Dr. Gruwell, members of her team and one of the original Freedom Writers featured in her work. Through storytelling, reflection activities and conversations about empathy, character, effort and preparing for high school, students were challenged to think about the kind of people they want to become and the impact they want to have on others.
Dr. Gruwell’s message was extremely well received by Clinton students, and the Clinton Central School District is proud of the way its participants represented Clinton throughout the experience. We are grateful for the opportunity to bring this experience to students and we look forward to seeing students carry these lessons forward as they continue their educational journey.
