Maddi Walters Completes Regional Program of Excellence Internship

Clinton Central Schools graduating senior, Madeline, “Maddi” Walters, recently completed her internship through the Regional Program for Excellence (RPE) at the Masonic Medical Research Institute. This internship program, offered by OHM BOCES, gives “selected high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to explore career options through an internship consisting of 72-75 hours.” The Regional Program for Excellence is focused on merging areas of interest with potential career opportunities.

Maddi has a strong interest in biology research and was given the opportunity to complete this program as a “lab intern” at the Masonic Medical Institute (MMRI) located in Utica, NY.  MMRI’s research team is “dedicated to improving the health and quality of life for all humankind.

Currently, they are focusing on cardiovascular diseases and providing ongoing education to scientists.

“It was really helpful to learn how professionals find information about their own research and enhance my understanding of lab processes,” Maddi states.

Her internship was under the direction of Dr. Lin, where she shadowed scientists and learned fundamental skills in the field she is hoping to enter after graduation.

Maddi’s interests reach far beyond the science laboratories! The track and field athlete, President of Science Olympaid and performer in school musicals, loves being a student at Clinton High School.

“It’s so nice to be with people who share similar goals and interests,” Maddi says. “I really love how enthusiastic my teachers are about their subjects.”

Currently, Maddi loves absorbing as much information as she can in her AP Chemistry class.
