Student Dress Code

The intent of the Student Dress Code is to foster an environment that is sanitary, safe and conducive to teaching and student learning. It is also intended to provide guidance to prepare students for their role in the workplace and society. All students are expected to give proper attention to personal cleanliness and to dress appropriately for school and school functions. Students’ dress needs to be appropriate for the function you are attending. At these times you are a representative of your community and school, and the impression you make reflects on all.

The school does not dictate styles. However, school officials reserve the right to determine what acceptable and unacceptable attire is. Students and their parents have the primary responsibility for acceptable student dress and appearance. Teachers and all other District personnel should exemplify and reinforce acceptable student dress and help students develop an understanding of appropriate appearance in the school setting.

A student's dress, grooming and appearance, including jewelry, make-up, and nails, shall:

  1. Be safe, appropriate and not disrupt or interfere with the educational process.
  2. Ensure that underwear or undergarments are completely covered with outer clothing.
  3. Include footwear at all times. Footwear that is a safety hazard will not be allowed.
  4. Not include the wearing of hats or sunglasses in the middle school or elementary school during the school day except for a medical or religious purpose.
  5. Not include items that are vulgar, obscene, libelous, or denigrate others on account of race, color, religion, creed, national origin, gender, sexual orientation or disability.
  6. Not promote, reference, and/or endorse the use of alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs and/or encourage other illegal or violent activities; including messages that are innuendos or have double meanings.
  7. Ensure that all Physical Education clothes must fulfill the dress code requirements. No jewelry should be worn during PE.

Nothing in this policy will be construed to limit the ability of students to wear clothing that allows them to express their gender identity, or to discipline students for doing so.

Each Building Principal or his/her designee shall be responsible for informing all students and their parents of the student dress code at the beginning of the school year and any revisions to the dress code made during the school year.

Students who violate the student dress code shall be required to modify their appearance by covering or removing the offending item, and if necessary or practical, replacing it with an acceptable item. Any student who refuses to do so shall be subject to discipline, up to and including in-school suspension for the day. Any student who repeatedly fails to comply with the dress code or violates the dress code by wearing the same inappropriate article of clothing shall be subject to further discipline, up to and including out of school suspension. Notwithstanding the foregoing, nothing herein shall be construed to prohibit the wearing of specific clothing items during school spirit days sanctioned by the building principal.
