Clinton Middle School Summer Reading Program
Eighth Grade
To All Incoming Eighth Graders: The English Language Arts (ELA) teachers here at CMS are committed to encouraging students to become strong readers and life-long learners. As part of this commitment, we have designed a reading program that includes variety and choice as a way to encourage reading during the summer. As always, we suggest you read age appropriate books, a variety of genres, and authors. A list of suggested titles, for middle school students, is available on the CCS website. Requirements: · Read a minimum of three (3) books of your choice. · Read Land of Hope by Joan Lowery Nixon. This book will be provided to all students at the end of the school year. · Select and complete the Literary Report forms provided for three (3) books of choice. It is preferred you select a different form for each book. · Complete the study guide for Land of Hope. The study guide will be provided to all students at the end of the school year. All reports will be collected for grading on Friday, September 28, 2007. Each Literary Report form, including the study guide, will be worth 25 points for a total of 100 possible points. Students may read additional books for extra credit (2 points per book for a maximum of 10 points), but a Literary Report form must be included to receive credit. The grade will constitute 10% of the first quarter grade. The study guide grade for Land of Hope will also be counted toward the eighth grade unit on immigration. The titles listed below are reserved for in-class reading during the school year; therefore, we ask that you do not read: · The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton · The Wave by Todd Strasser · Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl · The Devil’s Arithmetic by Jane Yolen This will allow the classroom reading experience to be new and exciting for all students. If you have any questions or concerns about this program, please contact Mrs. Dawes, Principal for Curriculum and Instruction, at pdawes@ccs.edu. Have a great summer and read, read, read!
