Clinton Middle School Summer Reading Program

Sixth Grade

To All Incoming Sixth Graders:

We at CMS are committed to helping our students become strong readers.  So, as we depart for the summer vacation, we prescribe a reading program for students who will be entering sixth grade in the fall.

Requirements:

  • Read a minimum of four (4) books.
  • Fill out a sixth grade summer reading report for each book.  Each report will be worth 25 points.
  • You may read up to five (5) books for extra credit.  Each extra credit report will be worth two (2) points.
  • Reports will be collected for grading on Friday, September 28th.  The grade will constitute 10% of the first quarter grade.

You may read any age appropriate book.  There is a list of suggested titles for middle school students on the CCS website.  You are not required to read books from this list, however.

Because some titles have been purchased as class sets to be read during the school year, we ask you do not read certain titles so the classroom experience will be fresh.  Those titles include:

            The Cay by Theodore Taylor

The Clay Marble by Minfong Ho

The Egypt Game by Zilpha Keatley Snyder

The Pride of Puerto Rico: The Life of Roberto Clemente by Paul Robert Walker

The Search for Delicious by Natalie Babbitt

            Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt

The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson

Welcome Home, Jellybean by Marlene Fanta Shyer

If you have any questions or concerns about this program, please contact Mrs. Dawes at pdawes@ccs.edu.  Have a great summer and read, read, read!!
